{"id":112,"date":"2025-10-16T20:13:23","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T20:13:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-pilot.library.illinois.edu\/libinfo\/?page_id=112"},"modified":"2026-04-03T18:07:41","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T18:07:41","slug":"returns-recalls","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp-pilot.library.illinois.edu\/libinfo\/borrow-materials\/returns-recalls\/","title":{"rendered":"Returns &amp; Recalls"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"return_items_span_class=sr-only_-_borrowingspan__0\">Return Items- Borrowing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"where_to_returnnbsp;material_1\">Where to Return&nbsp;Material<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Most items, including I-Share material<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 return to any\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.illinois.edu\/borrowing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2016\/06\/mapANDdirectory.pdf\">Urbana campus library<\/a>\u00a0circulation desk or bookdrop<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Exceptions<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Loanable technology<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>video games<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u2013 hand item to library staff at the circulation desk\u00a0where you checked out the item<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Interlibrary Loan<\/strong>\u00a0(NOT I-Share) materials \u2013 return to\u00a0the Main Library Circulation Desk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fragile<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Poor Condition<\/strong>\u00a0items \u2013 hand item to library staff at the\u00a0circulation desk where you checked out the item<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Recalled<\/strong>\u00a0items \u2013 hand item to staff at a circulation desk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"general_information_2\">General Information<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Library materials\u00a0<strong>can\u2019t\u00a0be returned through campus mail<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Items are discharged from your\u00a0account before being shipped back to the owning library.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When your returned UIUC items are checked in, you\u2019ll get a return receipt by email.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some I-Share libraries send return receipts by email when their items are returned, but others do not. To monitor your checked-out items in your Library account, click on the list of institutions on the side to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/guides.library.illinois.edu\/librarycatalog\/request-renew#s-lg-box-25290228\">see your current loans from each I-Share library<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Urbana Free and\u00a0Champaign Public Library material\u00a0<strong>cannot<\/strong>\u00a0be returned to U of I libraries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"outside_bookdrops_3\">Outside Bookdrops<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside bookdrops can be found in the following locations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Funk ACES Library \u2013 Outside the south entrance (by the circle drive)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grainger Engineering Library \u2013 Southeast corner of the building (on the engineering quad, near the loading dock)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Main Library \u2013 Southwest corner of the building, in the parking lot (upper level)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Music Building\u00a0\u2013 Outside the north entrance (opposite Krannert Center)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.illinois.edu\/borrowing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2016\/06\/mapANDdirectory.pdf\">U of I Library map and directory<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind the following when using a bookdrop:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Advantages\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They\u2019re available\u00a0when the Library is\u00a0closed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They\u2019re convenient.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disadvantages\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some items can\u2019t be returned to a bookdrop\u00a0(see Exceptions above).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Items may not be discharged from your account as quickly. Most bookdrops are emptied daily when the library is open.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recalls<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The University Library will usually only recall items needed for Reserves. Borrowers are not able to initiate recalls online and are encouraged to contact Central Access Services staff at circlib@library.illinois.edu or at 217-333-8400 to inquire about other options (including Interlibrary Loan) for obtaining the desired material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If an item you have checked out has been recalled, you will receive a notice indicating that the status of the item has changed to \u201crecall\u201d. This notice may also indicate that the due date has been shortened; usually the shortened due date is 15 days from the date the item was recalled. The Library\u2019s recall policy insures that library materials are equitably available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FAILURE TO RESPOND TO A RECALL WILL RESULT IN A $5.00\/DAY (maximum $30.00\/item) FINE. This fine applies to ALL borrowers, including faculty and staff who are not normally charged processing fees.
